Available today, Plugable’s new TBT-TRAN Thunderbolt cable transfers data at a rate of 10Gbps. It’s an impressive accessory, especially for multi-terabyte data transfers that usually take hours to complete. And to my excitement, it’s actually a decent length!
The TBT-TRAN requires a Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB 4 device to meet its maximum data transfer rate. It’s primarily intended for system-to-system data transfers (and comes with Easy Computer Sync software), though you can technically use it with any product, including cameras or portable SSDs. (Transfer speed will be determined by the USB or Thunderbolt specification used by connected products.)
For perspective, a 10Gbps transfer is eight times the maximum speed of USB 3. If you were to transfer 1TB of data over a 10Gbps connection, it would take less than 20 minutes.
I’m also very excited by the length of this cable. It measures at 6.6 feet or 2 meters. Most high-quality Thunderbolt data transfer cables are way too short for everyday applications, so I appreciate that Plugable went down this route. (That said, the cable would be cheaper if it were shorter.)
